Folk Beliefs

Folk belief in Fujian is characterized by its great variety of enshrined deities, which is a natural phenomenon of non-institutionalized worshiping. Between late Tang Dynasty and the Yuan Dynasty, many folk beliefs came into existence and their extensive influence is still felt today, such as Mazu, Lady Linshui (Chen Jinggu), the Two Xu Immortals, and Baosheng Dadi (God of Medicine). From the Ming and Qing dynasties onward, these folk beliefs were brought to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao and other parts of the world by emigrants.
