In 1866 Fujian Shipyard was founded in Mawei, Fuzhou, by Zuo Zongtang, then Viceroy of Fujian and Zhejiang. Within a short span of 40 years, Fujian Shipyard delivered substantial achievements in many fields, including advanced science and technology, higher education, industrial manufacturing and translation and dissemination of Western classics. The shipyard also produced a good number of outstanding technical talents for modern Chinese industry and excellent naval officers and soldiers. They demonstrated a spirit of the Chinese nation featuring patriotism, self-improvement, openness and diligence, which is what the shipbuilding culture is about.
