Resident population

The latest national census in 2010 showed a population of 36,894,216 for Fujian province, an increase of 2,179,381 from the previous one 10 years previous, for a 6.28–percent increase overall and an annual average of 0.61 percent.

Ethnic composition

Fujian is home to 36,097,361 Han, accounting for 97.84 percent of the total, with other ethnic groups numbering 796,855, or 2.16 percent. The number of Han has grown by 1,962,607 from the fifth census in 2000, or 5.75 percent, while the number of people from other ethnic groups has increased by 216,774, or 37.37 percent.

Ethnic groups

The province has 54 ethnic groups, numbering 583,800, or 1.7 percent of its total population. The She ethnic group number 375,100, or 64.3 percent of the ethnic group total and 52.9 percent of the total number of She in China, giving Fujian the largest number of She in China. The number of Hui people is 109,800, or 18.8 percent of the total number of ethnic people in Fujian. The Gaoshan people number 477, or 10 percent of China’s total number of Gaoshan.

Education

Fujian province has 3,084,679 people with a college education and 5,119,376 with a high school education, 13,977,607 with a middle school education, and 10,994,776 with primary schooling.

Population

By 2008, Fujian had 96 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, putting it in fifth place nationally in the number of academics.

Fujian also has 27,100 postgraduates and 562,600 undergraduates and junior college students at 83 institutes of higher learning, including 29 universities, 50 vocational and technical colleges, and 4 junior colleges.

Urban and rural people

There are 21,064,429 people living in urban areas of Fujian, or just over 57 percent of the total, and 15,829,787 people in rural areas, or 42.91 percent.
